Generosity Thrives on Giving Tuesday

No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted.” Aesop

November 29 is Giving Tuesday, a day specifically set aside to limit shopping and donate. Quickly gaining momentum, Giving Tuesday started in 2012 and annually falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Notably, 700,000 people took part in raising $116,000,000 online with 70 countries participating last year.

“The idea is to shift the focus of the holiday season from receiving to giving,” says Dustyn Shroff, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance, Florida’s largest independent homeowners insurance agency.

In fact, the Giving Tuesday website describes this global day of giving as a way to, “Kick off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.”

How Do You Participate?

Giving Tuesday, encourages the giving of time, money or talents. The website lists over 1,400 small businesses, schools and non-profits participating across Florida. In fact, you can narrow your search to find out what is happening your community.

Donate-Give money to a local or national charity. Where is your passion? Homelessness, suicide prevention, the environment, civil rights. With this in mind, put your money where your heartaches.

“If  donating to a national charity is your preference, a website such as Charity Navigator vets charities allowing you to give wisely,” says Buck with GreatFlorida Insurance, Florida’s leading independent homeowners insurance agency.

However, feeling a little tight on funds? Consider giving your time volunteering. Assisted living facilities and animal shelters are always looking for volunteers.

Donate blood or become an organ donor. Giving Tuesday is a great time to give away your gently used clothes or household items.

Make it personal- Set aside this day of giving to spend time with an older relative or friend. Offer to babysit a neighbor’s children. Bake cookies for a friend.

The entire family can participate. Teaching children the importance of generosity ultimately helps them become less self-focused and in touch with the world as well as the abundant needs of others.

Giving by and large enhances the life of the receiver as well as the giver therefore, making our world a more compassionate place.
